What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that providing a strong foundation in scales and basic theory is important, especially for young students. It gives them a solid ground from which to grow.

However, the pace and style of the lesson depend entirely on what the student needs and wants. I also try to instill a sense of accomplishment in my students when they learn something new, and genuine curiosity about their instrument and music in general.

In your opinion, what is the right way to teach and what do you do in your lessons that makes you a good teacher?

I don’t know that there’s one right way to teach, but I do believe there are wrong ways that need to be avoided.

For example, I try to make sure the student understands the connection between the keyboard and the notes written on the staff from the very beginning. In my opinion, some piano books take far too long to introduce the concept of reading music, and that can lead to a sense of frustration and even boredom.

I also found that sometimes it’s okay to take a short break to discuss something other than music — a hobby or activity that students care about.

The most important thing is to make their lessons fun and fulfilling, even if they are challenging.

How many years have you been teaching music lessons?

I have been teaching private lessons for about 10 years, and group lessons for 12.

I graduated from CUNY Hunter College in 2013, but have been teaching music to kids since well before that.

What are you most proud of in your musical career?

I write and produce my own music with my partner, and recently have started working with other musicians in a song-writing and producing role.

However, teaching at Hey Joe Guitar music school is up there with the best experiences I’ve had!

What’s the best compliment you have ever gotten as a music teacher?

Whenever students want longer lessons or extra time!

To me, this means they are not only learning to play the keyboard but also enjoy the experience. That’s as much as any teacher can hope for.

What country have you travelled to that you like the most and why?

I love Spain, especially the Catalonia region.

I visited Barcelona on my honeymoon and went back recently. The city’s architecture, especially Gaudi’s unique designs are stunning.

I also like typical Catalan cuisine, especially seafood dishes like Esqueixada de bacallà — a salted cod with vegetables.

What languages do you speak?

English and Spanish

If you could perform with any musician (alive or dead), who would it be and why?

Whitney Houston. To hear her voice fill up a room, and watch her in the recording studio would be amazing. It is such a pity she died young and deprived the world of her talent.

Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies? If so, tell us about it.

I used to be a professional pastry cook, and used to whip up chocolate-filled éclairs on almost daily basis. I see a connection between baking and music: both require craftmanship and passion!

What are you currently listening to on the radio, iPod, iTunes, Spotify, etc.?

Honestly, I love every kind of music but I currently can’t stop listening to “That’s What I Want” by Lil Nas X.
