Learn About “Ageless” Instruments, At New York Music School

If you own a musical instrument, chances are it is a “regular” one that you purchased or received as a gift. And it is also more than likely that the instrument is only a few years old, or even newer. Of course, you might be one of the lucky people who own an old and valuable instrument. If that’s the case, it may be worth big bucks.

Maybe you have an old instrument in your attic or storage that you once played and never thought of again, or one that you bought at a bargain price at a yard sale but forgot all about it? Well, you’d better have a second look at it because some vintage instruments are worth thousands of dollars.

A cash cow in your attic

The good news is that these instruments can be quite “ordinary,” that is, they don’t have to be made by famous manufacturers. This guide lists some of the instruments that a lot of musicians and collectors are looking for: If you own a Stradivarius violin, you can probably quit your job and live in the lap of luxury. But Strads are not the only strings that are valuable. Early- to mid-19th-century Italian violins, which could still be purchased in the 1950s for a few thousand dollars, are now worth 10 times as much. Let’s move on to other instruments. Do you happen to own a pre-1945 Martin and Gibson acoustic guitar? If so, you are in luck – between 1920s and early 1940s, these companies took advantage of advances in engineering and construction to build excellent guitars, before shifting to different manufacturing methods to meet the increasing demand for this instrument. As it so often happens, quantity prevailed over quality, and the prewar models remain in demand. Speaking of guitars, some accessories are also worth a good deal of money, such as amps containing glass vacuum tubes. Many of today’s musicians prefer the warm, rich sound of an old tube amp over the newer ones. Last, but not least, if you own Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos from the 1960s and 1970s, you have a great collectible on (or under) your hands. These instruments have physical hammers like acoustic pianos and electrical pickups like electric guitars, which fell out of fashion in the 1980s in favor of electronic synthesizers. All this goes to prove that old instruments don’t die out; they just are more in demand!

A good value

Of course, you don’t have to own one of the above-mentioned relics in order to play music. Whatever functional instrument you have, one of our teachers will come to your Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Riverdale home or office to give you lessons. But you may want to hold on to your instrument and treat it well because one day it could be worth its weight in gold!

Celebrate Veterans Day, with New York Music School

Two days from now, on November 11, we will celebrate Veterans Day, which honors US veterans past and present. We salute them and thank them for their service. Like cities and towns across America, New York will hold its own parade – the largest celebration of veterans in the country. Every year since 1919, when the 369th Infantry – just back from fighting in WWI – proudly marched up Fifth Avenue, thousands of veterans and other participants re-trace the same route.

This year’s parade will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, and the 25th anniversary of Desert Shield. We think one of the best ways to remember the sacrifices of our veterans is to look back at the music that accompanied them into the battlefield. From the bugles, pipes, and drums of the Civil War to the protest songs of the Vietnam era, the music has been an important part of American history.

Songs of glory

At 239 years, America is a relatively young nation. The first armed conflict it engaged in was the one that actually served to lay the cornerstone of our country – the American Revolutionary War, which lasted from 1775 to 1783. Of course, there are no original recordings of any pieces of music from that era (or until WWI, for that matter), but we do know that one of the most popular songs at that time was “Ballad of the Green Mountain Boys.” , but early fall in New York is usually lovely as well. Trees in Central Park and other green spaces in the city are “dressed” in eye-popping colors of yellow, orange, and red. And the freshly fallen leaves emit a subtle, earthy scent into the crisp air.

As the 19th century English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley so beautifully wrote, “There is a harmony in autumn, and a luster in its sky.” Is it any wonder that the beauty of the fall season has inspired not only poets, painters, and other artists, but also many composers and songwriters? Let’s listen to some pieces of music inspired by colors, scents, and the mood of the autumn.

Season’s bounty

At the beginning of the 18th century, Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi wrote four violin concertos, which turned out to be his most famous work. Titled “The Four Seasons,” it included the very beautiful autumn concerto . A century later, Austrian composer Josef Strauss wrote a waltz entitled “Autumn Roses” are truly unique and very beautiful.

Who knows how popular Leonardo’s invention would have become had it ever been mass-produced. It may not have ended up in the Louvre museum like the Mona Lisa, but it could have brought lots of pleasure and enjoyment to music lovers everywhere!

Playing their own tune

This is just one example of a little-known instrument, but there are many others. Unlike the viola organista, however, these instruments actually exist and are used – though not widely. Here’s a list of some interesting musical creations you likely never knew existed:

The design of an instrument called the “gameleste” was commissioned by the Icelandic singer Björk for her 2011 album Biophilia. It’s a combination of a traditional Indonesian gamelan and a piano-like celesta. This hybrid instrument is quite unique and the sound it emits is ear-pleasing – by holding and strumming it, you literally get the feel of what this instrument is all about, from its smooth and curvy body, the fretted fingerboard, and, of course, its sound!

Once you or your child decide to learn to play the guitar, we’ll be here to help. We have many excellent guitar teachers and will be happy to match you up with one best suited to your level and needs. He or she will come to your Manhattan, Brooklyn or Riverdale home or office and teach you to…strike a chord!

Manhattan Music School Helps You Enjoy Irish Tunes

Ah, St. Patrick’s Day – what great fun, even if you are not Irish. Now, you might think that this holiday, which falls on March 17, is all about eating, drinking, dancing, parading, and lots of merriment. That it is, but there is so much more to St. Patrick’s Day that you may not know about.

Before he became patron saint of Ireland (which is called “Eire” in Gaelic, Ireland’s native language), Patrick was credited with bringing Christianity to his native land in the 5th century AD. Throughout centuries that followed, his life has been shrouded in legends and mysteries –including the famous tale about Patrick banishing all the snakes from Ireland. This and many other stories traditionally associated with St. Patrick are just part of the folklore, as well as rich storytelling traditions the Irish are known for. What history does tell is that Patrick, a son of the wealthy British, was kidnapped at 16 by Irish outlaws and brought to Ireland, where he was a slave until his escape to France six years later. However, he later had a vision in which he preached gospel to the Irish, so he eventually returned to Ireland, where he built churches and spread the Christian faith.

True colors

When we think of St. Patrick, we think of green. After all, leprechauns and shamrocks are green, right? And, Ireland is also known as The Emerald Isle, all of which may explain why we believe that green is that country’s national color. It is not! In fact, it is royal blue, though the green is the color of Irish Catholics. As legend has it, St. Patrick supposedly used a three- leaf clover to teach the Irish about the Trinity, so the shamrock’s shape and color came to symbolize the Irish Christianity and became associated with St. Patrick’s Day. As for the explanation behind the name “Emerald Isle,” it has more to do with Ireland’s climate than with history. Relatively mild winters and plenty of rain turn the country’s abundant pastureland a bright emerald green color. So now you know!

When Irish eyes are smiling

As New Yorkers, we at Hey Joe Guitar love the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. That’s because a significant number of our fellow NYC residents are of the Irish descent. Although the biggest wave of Irish immigration to NYC occurred in the late 19th century, when Ireland suffered a devastating famine, the first Irish immigrants arrived here during the colonial era of the 18th century. In fact, New York’s first St. Patrick’s Day parade dates back to 1762. According to the official website of NYC’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, that first event “was held on lower Broadway by a band of homesick Irish ex-patriots and Irish military, who served with the British Army stationed in the American colonies. This was a time when the wearing of green was a sign of Irish pride and was banned in Ireland. The parade participants reveled in the freedom to speak Irish, wear the green, sing Irish songs and play the pipes to Irish tunes that were very meaningful to the Irish immigrants who had fled their homeland.” What a difference three centuries make: today, our city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is the largest in the world – bigger than even in Ireland!

Celtic thunder

Leprechauns, castles, good luck and laughter Lullabies, dreams, and love ever after. Poems and songs with pipes and drums A thousand welcomes when anyone comes. That’s the Irish for you! Talk about the luck of the Irish! You didn’t think we’d talk about St. Patrick’s Day without mentioning music, did you? Numerous musicians of Irish descent have made their mark on the American music scene: bandleader Tommy Dorsey, and singers Judy Collins, Alice Cooper, Sinead O’Connor, and Kurt Cobain, among many others. What about the traditional Irish songs? Many typical ones are ballads and folk songs, and quite a few are…drinking songs! All of us have probably seen images of hearty Irish town or village folk sitting in a pub and belting out tunes while raising their glasses of frothy Guinness. It’s possible that one of those songs is “My Wild Irish Rose” or “Danny Boy” Beethoven (By the way, one of the most eloquent descriptions of feelings evoked by this piece came from the famous philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. A listener, he said, “might feel that he is floating above the earth in a starry dome, with the dream of immortality in his heart; all the stars seem to glimmer around him, and the earth seems to sink ever deeper downwards.”)

“Soul” music

Just as listening to music is a deeply emotional experience, so is playing an instrument or singing a song. Very few people (we personally don’t know any) can detach themselves from the music they are making and remain “neutral.” We can only imagine that this kind of rendition would be totally flat and lifeless.

Being a good musician – even if you are just starting out – means that you can convey your own musical emotions to your listeners. That’s an art, but the kind of art you can certainly master.

That’s where our wonderful teachers come in. Accomplished musicians in their own right, they will teach you or your child not only the right techniques, but also how to convey your feelings through music (and yes, even children have the ability to connect with their audience on a deeply emotional level). It doesn’t matter whether you are looking for guitar or piano lessons (or any other instrument), just contact us and we’ll send an emotionally aware teacher to your Manhattan, Brooklyn or Riverdale home or office.

And here is another quote to inspire you on your “emotional” musical journey. It comes from Plato: “Musical training is a more potent instrument than any other, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul.”

What is the happiest place on earth? If you think it’s New York City, we agree with you – it really is our kind of town. But actually, this title belongs to none other than Magic Kingdom, one of Walt Disney World’s theme parks in Orlando, Florida (but you already knew this, didn’t you?)

We are guessing that Magic Kingdom got this tagline for a simple reason that it really is fun for kids and adults alike. It’s a place where Peter Pan can fly, Cinderella can find her Prince Charming with the help of a glass slipper, and wooden Pinocchio can become a real boy. In other words, it’s a place where dreams really do come true (and to think that it all started with a mouse!)

It’s easy to be happy in this enchanting kingdom, one that inspired so many fairy tales, quirky and lovable characters, and, of course, a multitude of songs. In fact, music from various Disney movies is among the most recognized around the world.

When we say “multitude” of songs, we are not exaggerating – by some count, there are well over 800 of them. Obviously, we can’t list all of them here, but we’ll try to give you a run-down on some of our favorites.

With a smile and a song

Nearly everyone who believes in magic knows such timeless classics as “When You Wish Upon a Star” from Pinocchio, “Some Day My Prince Will Come” from Snow White, “Once Upon a Dream” from Sleeping Beauty, “A Spoonful of Sugar” from Mary Poppins, and “The Circle of Life” from The Lion King.

But, there are so many more! We don’t know which one is the fairest of them all, but we dare say all of them are …superfragilisticexpialidocious:

Let the magic (and music) begin

Did you know that Donald’s nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie play the trumpet, accordion and bass, respectively? One of the seven dwarfs, Sleepy, plays the flute, and Goofy is a whiz at the trombone, flute, tenor saxophone, and trumpet (though not simultaneously).

Whether you’d like to learn to play one of the many Disney songs, or just master an instrument and make your own music – hakuna matata, your wish will be granted!

Our teachers are skilled at all of the above-mentioned instruments, and then some! And they don’t need a magic carpet to show up at your Manhattan, Brooklyn or Riverdale home or office for a private lesson – they will take a subway.

To quote Jiminy Cricket, “the most fantastic, magical things can happen, and it all starts with a wish!”

New York Music Lessons Will Never Change Their Tune

Welcome to 2015! We don’t know about you, but to us the New Year feels – at least so far – pretty much the same as 2014. And while the “old” year is still fresh in our minds, let’s go back in time and revisit the music highlights of 2014.

As you know, the music scene is not static; as a matter of fact, it changes so quickly – not just from one year to another but also from month to month – that someone who is not an all-out music fan may not be able to keep up with all the developments.

Ask yourself this: do I remember which songs topped the pop music charts in 2013? More than likely, the answer is “NO!” Let us refresh your memory: that year’s top three songs on Billboard magazine’s list were “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus, Kacey Musgrave’s “Follow Your Arrow,” and “Royals” by Lorde. If this seems like ancient history, it is, at least by the standards of the fast-evolving and ever-changing music industry.

The 2014 hit parade

You may have better luck remembering last year’s hits. But if not, we are here to remind you which songs reached the top of the charts and made the proverbial “killing” in 2014.

The first on the “Official Top 40 Most streamed Songs of 2014” is “Rather Be”

Last year’s biggest selling artist albums are: “X” by Ed Sheeran, “In the Lonely Hour,” by Sam Smith, and Coldplay’s “Ghost Stories.” However, interestingly enough, Forbes magazine points out that “in 2014, not a single artist’s album has gone platinum.” Only one album “has managed to sell over a million copies:” the ever-popular Frozen soundtrack.

Enquiring minds want to know: what songs and artists will be most popular in 2015? We promise to update you…a year from now!

We are not quick-change artists!

As we mentioned, music industry is in a constant whirl – what’s “in” today may very well be “out” tomorrow. You may be wondering whether anything in life, other than death and taxes, remains the same – always present and always dependable.

Thankfully, some things never waver. Our music lessons and teachers are impervious to all the changes in the music charts. Therefore, when one of our teachers comes to your Manhattan, Brooklyn or Riverdale home or office, you can expect the highest quality of instruction – year after year.

Whether they teach the guitar, trumpet, or any other instrument, these talented folks are always “hot” and “trendy.”

If you quack like a duck rather than sing like a nightingale, call New York music school!

“When she started to play, Mr. Steinway came down personally and rubbed his name off the piano.”
~Bob Hope

Actually, we at New York music school are pretty sure that never happened, but this very funny quote suggests that tone-deaf people shouldn’t subject their fellow men to their music.

Does this sound familiar to you? Does everyone around you run for the hills, and does your dog hide under the sofa with his paws over his ears when you start to sing or play?

Or maybe you’d like to learn to play an instrument, but you think you can’t because you have been called “tone-deaf?” This is the same as saying you can’t dance because you have “two left feet.”

However, rest assured that neither condition is terminal; in other words, both can be “cured.” Of course, we can’t talk with any level of expertise about the feet, but we do know a thing or two about overcoming the syndrome humorously referred to as “Van Gogh’s ear for music.”

We don’t actually know whether the great painter could belt out a tune either before or after he snipped off his ear, but we have seen plenty of cases of people who enjoyed singing or playing an instrument, even though they (and everyone around them) believed they were tone / tune-deaf. Fact is, not everyone is a natural talent, but most people can (and do) become proficient at music through work and practice. That’s the truth and don’t let this message fall… on deaf ears!

Tuning in

In its strictest sense, tone-deafness means the inability to distinguish different pitches. We have all heard tuneless warbling or instrumental renditions that sound more like a subway train screeching to a stop than a piece of music.

However, before you call someone (or yourself) tone-deaf, know that this condition is actually very rare – only about 1 percent of the population is truly “amusical.” The rest of the people believed to be tone-deaf actually aren’t, even if they happen to sing / play off-key.

As the late comedian George Burns put it: “”I love to sing, and I love to drink scotch. Most people would rather hear me drink scotch.” (Though Burns was no Pavarotti, he certainly wasn’t shy about singing in public).

So the question is, why can’t some people carry even the simplest of tunes? There may be several reasons for that.

Imperfect pitch

Of course, we can’t generalize because each individual case is different, but some of the common reasons may be:

Poor hearing: Impaired hearing can certainly diminish our ability to distinguish different pitches, sounds, rhythms, etc.

Lack of concentration: This happens when you learn to sing or play a particular piece, but you are distracted and not focusing all your mental energies on music. Learning to play is like mastering any subject: you must pay attention!

Poor control of vocal muscles may be another reason all your songs sound as exciting as a dentist’s drill.

And perhaps the most common culprit of all: lack of practice. In this particular case, your flat notes are not due to tone-deafness, but, rather, to not having regular practice sessions.

Music to your ears

If the first of the above-mentioned reasons is responsible for flat notes and off-key sounds, we suggest you have a hearing test and follow whatever treatment the specialist suggests. A good hearing ability is essential not only for playing music, but for life in general.

But if you are “tuned out” because of the three other reasons – distracted mind, poor control of vocal muscles, and lack of regular practice (at least half an hour a week with a teacher), our lessons from New York music school can help.

Our teachers will come to your New York home or office, and give you vocal lessons or teach you to play an instrument. You will have an excellent, comprehensive training that includes not only the actual music part, but also all the other essential elements mentioned above. So all the music you sing or play will be easy on the ear!
